Day Two

Have you been wearing God’s wardrobe to work lately? Did you know there was one?

We talked about wearing compassion and kindness. The third garment in this special wardrobe is humility. Sometimes people think of humility as being weak or wimpy. But that’s not true humility. The Bible defines humility as a lack of pride, and an awareness of who we are in comparison to who God is.

When we wear humility, it just means that we are teachable. We don’t know it all, we do need help, and we don’t toot our own horns. Been wearing humility lately? It’s a good-looking outfit.

And then we come to gentleness. We need that gentle and quiet spirit that Peter says is precious in the sight of God. Gentleness is most often apparent in what we say and how we say it.

Often our words can pierce and hurt people before we realize what we’re doing. We need to pray for a gentle tongue. Gentle answers turn away anger, we are told in Proverbs 15:1, and a gentle spirit brings peace to chaotic situations. It is a precious garment, and everyone will love it on you!

The next garment we find in this wardrobe for the inner person is patience. This is a really difficult garment for me to wear; it just never seems to fit—always a little too small for me.

And yet I remind myself that God put it on his list, and he didn’t make any exceptions, not even for me. Just because it doesn’t come easy is no excuse for me—or you—to not wear patience. For years I’ve prayed that God would help me wear patience, and you know what—it fits better now than it did a year ago. If I can wear patience, so can you.
