There’s a wonderful little booklet entitled “My Heart, Christ’s Home,” which makes us realize that when we are born from above, we become the dwelling place of the Spirit of God and he possesses us. But sometimes we don’t give him access to the whole place; we try to keep a closet for ourselves.
If Jesus, the King, were making an inspection of your house today, the house which he has purchased and which now belongs to him, would he find some rooms or areas that weren’t cleaned up? Would you be embarrassed for him to look in some of your inner closets?
If you’ll just think about it, you’ll have to admit, every time you walk by that closet, you’re convicted. You know you should clean it out, but you’ve had that stuff for so long, and you just can’t seem to find the power to clean it out. You are actually in bondage to what is in the closet.
Ah, but the great news is, the King will help you clean it out. I want to challenge you to open up every area of your life, every closet you’ve got, no matter how small it is or how long you’ve kept it locked, and give him permission to clean it out and take possession of what is rightfully his, your heart, Christ’s home.
What are you keeping in that closet?
• Immorality and impurity
Do you turn off the television or change channels when immorality is portrayed as an acceptable lifestyle? Do you keep listening when a dirty joke is told, or even a slightly off-color one?
One of my sisters in Christ at my church related how she had become addicted to a soap opera, which she taped every day and watched in the evenings. But she was convicted about the immorality and impurity of that program, not to mention the waste of time. So with prayer and commitment, she has cleaned out that closet, and now she feels so free from that trash.
Another friend got rid of trashy romantic novels she had been reading for years, sometimes as many as one a day. It seemed a harmless thing at first, but gradually it took control of her and she found her thought life greatly damaged by the dirt of those novels. By God’s grace, she has cleaned out that closet.
Is there something in your life which you know is not pure? If you really want to be free, then clean out the closet today—thoroughly and completely clean it out. Remember, the King lives in your house.
