PROGRAM D-8388

I’m quite certain that none of us would want any garbage in our diet. But there are other forms of garbage which you may be taking in, perhaps without even realizing it. I’m exploring the topic of ear garbage, eye garbage, and heart garbage.

Jesus said, “The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light” (Matthew 6:22). Your eye is the entrance to your mind and a doorway to your very soul. Did you know that studies have shown that the input we receive visually through our eyes is far more powerful than the words we hear or the tone of voice? What you see—what you choose to look at—will always make a lasting impression on you. That’s why eye garbage is so dangerous.

If healthy eyes mean that we are full of light, the opposite will be true as well. If your eyes are not healthy, you whole body will be full of darkness. If you allow eye garbage to darken your eyes, then you have unhealthy eyes, and that will affect your whole body—mind, body, and spirit.

So, what is eye garbage? It is looking at anything that contaminates your soul. Keep in mind that the enemy of our soul, Satan, disguises himself as an angel of light when, in fact, he is a deceiver and his intention is to blind us to truth and corrupt our minds. He uses our eyes to gain entrance to our minds. Think of the evil that he parades now. From pornography on the internet, to the violence seen on television and movies, to the sex that is flaunted on billboards, commercials, and television sitcoms, Satan has spread his eye garbage in every direction!

I want to encourage you to take seriously what you look at and become intentional about getting rid of eye garbage. It affects you more than you realize. I remember, many years ago, when I sat down one evening to watch the news. I was planning to do some writing afterwards, but instead I started watching a movie which came on. It was about an illicit affair which was portrayed in sympathetic tones—making you feel sorry for the couple who were involved. I was hooked into the story with all its sexually suggestive scenes, and I wasted two hours instead of getting work done. I couldn’t get those images out of my mind for days. And you know when they bombarded my mind most? When I was trying to pray.

I determined then that the cleanup job for eye garbage was just too expensive and too long! Since then, I’ve been very particular about what I allow into my mind through my eyes. It’s simply not worth it to take in eye garbage—it’s really difficult to clean it out.
