Can you imagine how much better you’d feel at the end of your days if you heard at least as much encouragement as discouragement? We all need to be encouraged, and without it we shrivel and grow weak. Why in the world don’t we decide to become encouragers?
To become an encourager, I think you need a plan. Make a weekly plan to encourage people. Actually decide ahead of time what you will do for whom—what notes you’ll write, what cards you’ll send, what calls you’ll make, what person you’ll choose to encourage. I put those encouraging things I want to do on my "To-Do" list each week, and I try to make them a very high priority.
What happens when we become encouragers? There is a basic principle in God’s Word which holds so true here. That principle is "Whatever you sow, you reap." As you’re investing your time in other people’s lives, you’ll discover that it starts to come back to you. The very act of encouraging others becomes an encouragement to you. When you see their smiles and their appreciation, it warms your heart and you’re encouraged. It’s like a boomerang: you give it out and it comes right back to you.
Well, how about it? Are you determined to become more and more encouraging? Set your mind to it, pray much about it, and look for ways to encourage. It becomes one of the greatest joys of life. I encourage you to encourage others.
