I wonder if you’ve ever seriously considered the verse in Psalm 46 which says “Be still and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10). This is a key principle in our Christian walk. If we don’t learn the discipline of being still—both physically and spiritually—we will never really know God in the way he intends for us to.

“Be still and know that I am. . .” Moses asked God what he would tell the children of Israel if they asked him, “What is his name?” “God said to Moses, ‘I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: I AM has sent me to you’” (Exodus 3:14).

“I AM” is God’s name. What does that mean to you? Here’s how I think of it. Fill in the missing word. “I need                   .” Whatever word you can put in that missing blank, Jesus can fill it in, because he is I AM. He is our total need-satisfier. Just listen to a few of the I AM’s we find in Scripture:

I AM your shield. I AM the Lord that heals you. I AM with you. I AM he who comforts you. I AM the Way, the Truth and the Life. I AM meek and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your soul. I AM the bread of life. I AM the light of the world. I AM the door of the sheep. I AM the good shepherd.

Jesus asked Peter, “Who do you say I am?” (Matthew 16:15). That’s my question to you. What is your understanding of I AM? Do you allow God to be to you all that he is willing and capable of being? Is your missing blank today “I need a husband?” Isaiah 54:5 says, “For your Maker is your husband.” Is your missing blank “I need money?” Philippians 4:13 says, “My God will meet all your needs. . .”

Do you need healing of your body, your mind or your emotions? Jesus is the Lord who heals you. Are you lonely? I AM is with you always, able to take away that loneliness if you will learn to know that he is God. Are you hurting badly today because of a broken relationship, rejection, or loss that you’ve suffered? I AM is there to comfort you and meet that need for you.

“Be still, and know that I AM. . .” That begins by being still with God—taking time to get your body and mind quiet so that you can know that he is God.

Until you take time to be still and know God, you won’t experience his all-sufficiency, the power of I AM to meet all your needs. Will you today begin to be still and know the great I AM who is waiting to be gracious to you?
