PROGRAM D-8231

You probably know or have heard this verse from Philippians 4:6, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” It’s easy to quote that verse, but I still find that I can become anxious pretty easily. You, too? Let me note that this is not a suggestion, but a command: Do not be anxious about anything!

Do not be anxious about anything!? Really? Seems like mission impossible. But if you are born from above through faith in Jesus Christ, then you have power to do what seems impossible because you have been given the Spirit of Christ.

I want to give you ten simple things you and I can do, by God’s grace and through the power of the Holy Spirit, which can help you to deal with and dispel those everyday anxieties you may experience. Let’s get started.

Talk to yourself—out loud if you can

Speak truth to yourself. When we are feeling some anxiety, we tend to forget what we should remember. This is when you must make yourself remember what you know to be true. In times of anxiety, we exaggerate problems and issues. They look much larger than they actually are.

Therefore, it’s important to get a realistic perspective of what you’re facing. A good way to do this is to start talking to yourself. Reprimand yourself, if you need to. Recite the good things that you have in your life. Recall a recent blessing in your life! Get your perspective back to something realistic.

Sing or play some uplifting music

Music is one of God’s best gifts to us, and the right music can truly calm your fears and release a lot of tension. I love to just sing along with some of my favorite music—loudly when I can—and it always lifts my spirits. I want to encourage you—when you’re beginning to feel anxious about something—use music as a weapon against anxiety. It truly helps.
