How would you rate your job satisfaction? Do you like your job? Not many people do, they tell us. I really love what I do. But not because I have the world’s most glamorous or exciting job. Rather it’s because I know I’m where God wants me to be, doing what he wants me to do, so even the mundane things have meaning, though they are still mundane.
When I sit down to write for this program or for books, I do not find that time exhilarating; I find it hard work. I have to make myself write most of the time. I have to force the discipline on myself, or I’ll get busy with all kinds of things to avoid writing. But I love to communicate, so I have to write.
Here at the offices of The Christian Working Woman, we have a small staff of three devoted women and me. So, we all have to pitch in and do all kinds of work in order to get the job done. I do some of those repetitive things myself. Lots of mundane work, but it has to be done and I can do it as well as anyone else.
Mundane aspects of work can teach us many things: humility, servanthood, persevering until the job is done. Those mundane things, done for the glory of God, can become beautiful times of worship, of singing, of staying in touch with The King of kings and Lord of lords.
I used to do a lot of business training to earn my living, and there are many aspects of that job that were not appealing to me, mostly the heavy travel. But I came to realize that God had given me work that sharpened my skills and allowed me to have time to manage this ministry. So, I learned how to put the negatives out of my mind and thank God for his goodness.
Any job can be meaningful when it is done to God’s glory. It may not be fulfilling, but then we’ll never find true fulfillment in any job or career. That comes only through Jesus Christ.
So, is it necessary that you have a fulfilling job? No, it’s necessary that you be where God wants you to be, and then you will find fulfillment in him and meaning in your work. You will know that whatever you’re doing is not without merit, does not go unnoticed by God. And when you do it as unto him, you’ll discover how your attitude will change toward the job itself.
