Why do we fail God’s tests?

  • Lack of obedience is one reason. In the midst of his great tests, Job didn’t let anyone else destroy his faith in God. He could say “My feet have followed closely his steps; I have kept to his way without turning aside” (Job 23:11). That’s how Job passed God’s test.
  • We will fail God’s tests if we abandon God’s Word. The Word of God is our homework, and we have to stay up on the material so we’re prepared for the tests. And you can’t cram for God’s tests. You need to consistently pour God’s Word into your life.
  • We will fail when we try to please people, not God. In I Thessalonians 2:4 Paul writes “We are not trying to please people but God, who tests our hearts.” Remember, he’s the One who keeps score and you need to please him alone.
  • We fail because we don’t fear God enough. We need holy fear of the consequences of not obeying, not passing the test. It is gloriously true that God does not condemn us, but it is also true that we need to fear the consequences of not following him.
  • We fail through complaining and griping. Job said, “Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?” (Job 2:10). If you’re going through the test with a complaining spirit, you’re failing even though you may endure.

Here are Job’s words of encouragement to those who are being tested:

Blessed is the man whom God corrects; so do not despise the discipline of the Almighty. For he wounds, but he also binds up; he injures, but his hands also heal (Job 5:17-18).

You can take it from a man who knew better than any other what it was to be tested by God. If you’re in the midst of the terrible part right now, remember, God wounds, but he also binds up and heals. Look beyond the pain to the gain and be encouraged to know that this test is for your benefit in the end.
