I want to illustrate the truth that our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit, and we are not our own, for we’ve been bought with a price. Therefore, our temples should be fit places for a King. Imagine the King of kings inspecting your home.

As the King begins his inspection you say, “Oh, I always try to keep my house very clean for you, Sir.  I wouldn’t want you to live in a cluttered or dirty house.”

“Well, it looks quite nice actually,” he replies.  “Now what room is this?”

“This is the living room, and as you can see, it’s spotless,” you explain.  “I’ve just cleaned it. Got rid of some old stuff that’s been lying around too long.  Just threw away a bunch of reading material and videos.”

“And why,” the King asks, “did you discard those things?”

“Well, I just thought you probably would never read things like these tabloid magazines or watch these R-rated movies.  I mean, it was just junk, so I threw it out,” you say.

“I appreciate that greatly,” the King smiles.  “And what is in that closet there?”

“Oh,” you stutter, “. . . nothing really.  Why don’t you come on in here; I’ll show you the kitchen. You’ll see that everything sparkles here in the kitchen.”

“Yes, it is very tidy,” the King says, “but can I see that closet?”

“Uh, uh….,” you tug at his arm nervously;  “have you seen the bedroom?  Here come see the bedroom.  I’ve got it in perfect condition for you.  I want you to feel right at home here.  After all, this house belongs to you.”

“That’s good but,” the King insists, “I do need to see that closet.  Could you just open that closet for me?”

“Well, I don’t think I can do that.  You see, it’s locked,” you answer.

“Do you have the key?” he asks.

“Yes, but there are some private things in there.  When you bought my house and took possession, I just needed some place to keep a few things.  It’s just one little closet; I’m sure you won’t mind as long as I keep it locked, right?”

“Well,” the King replies, “I will know what’s in that closet no matter how tightly locked you keep it.  I’m afraid you will have to open it.”

“You mean to tell me I can’t keep one little closet in this whole house just for me?” you reply defensively.  “What’s the big deal with one closet?  You have all the other space.  All I’ve got left is this one closet and it’s mine.”

“Did you not agree,” the King replies gently, “when you asked me to live in your house, that I could control every area of it?”

“Well, yes, but one little closet….”

“If it is my home, don’t I have the right to that closet?” the King asks.

What closet are you keeping shut to the King?
