Hey, how’re you doing? That’s a common greeting we use these days. But I would suggest that we need to have someone ask us seriously, “How are you doing?” We need accountability so that we don’t wander away from the faith. Is there anyone in your life who you have given permission to hold you accountable? It’s a very smart thing to do.
I’ve been giving you some examples of accountability questions for someone to ask you regularly—indeed for you to ask yourself. Consider some of these questions:
- What one sin plagued your walk with God this week?
That’s getting personal, isn’t it, but it’s a question we need to take seriously. I would have to say that discouragement has plagued my walk the last few days, and I finally held myself accountable, recognizing it as sin, and forsaking those discouraging thoughts that want to invade my mind. We can hide a lot of things from others, but not from God. What one sin has plagued you recently?
- Did you worship with other believers this week?
The Bible says we are not to forsake gathering together with other believers. It’s good to know you are going to be accountable to someone for your faithfulness in going to church and being involved in God’s work.
- What was your biggest joy this week? Did you thank God for it?
It would be good to be held accountable for remembering to give thanks for God’s goodness.
- Are you giving to the Lord’s work financially?
- How have you demonstrated a servant’s heart this week?
Just verbalizing these questions helps me remember what’s important and what isn’t! Accountability is such an important discipline; we need it in every area of our lives. I hope you have an accountability partner.
