Proverbs tells us that when words are many, sin is not lacking. But it also tells us that words have the power of life or death. And Proverbs 16:24 says that “Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.” While it’s true that often we say too much, it is also true that there are important times when we don’t say enough.
The topic “Leave Nothing Unsaid,” comes from a wonderful workbook by that title, created by Jody Noland. Jody’s dream is for every parent to prepare a letter of affirmation for each of their children and for other significant loved ones. Obviously this is critically important when one is facing death, but I’m absolutely convinced that all of us in all stages of life need to take the time to put in writing our deepest love and care and affirmation for people close to us.
Years before my parents died, it dawned on me that I had never put in writing how much I loved and appreciated them. So, in a handwritten letter I told them how they had influenced my life and how thankful I was to be their daughter. My parents treasured that simple letter as though it were gold. Obviously I verbalized my love to them many times, but there’s something about putting it in writing that truly makes a difference.
So, I want to encourage all of us to decide to “leave nothing unsaid” and to compose a letter to someone dear to us, just to make sure they know how they are loved and what they mean to us. As Jody says in her book, “The important thing is to DO IT! No one is going to grade you on your writing ability. What’s important is to get your feelings in writing…”
You can present your letter on birthdays or other special occasions. It’s up to you! As Jody says, “There are no ‘rules’ other than that you need to get it done.”
If you go to our website, you’ll find a link to Jody’s website, and you can order her book there. You’ll find it helpful, but truly, it’s just a matter of determining to do it and to do it now!
