There are certain clichés we’ve become so accustomed to, that we just believe them without a second thought. But some of them are truly deceptive. Let’s look at some of these deceptive clichés.
The first one is “Time heals all wounds.” I’ve heard people use this cliché in trying to comfort someone in their loss. Their efforts are well-meaning, but it’s as if they are saying that after some amount of time you’ll no longer be sad or angry or fearful—you’ll get over all these emotions that you’re experiencing now. A logical question, then, is, “If it’s true that time heals all wounds, how much time are we talking about? A month? A year?” Who knows!
Think about what happens to wounds that are simply left to heal on their own. They can become infected and cause worse problems. Waiting for time to heal a broken heart could simply make matters worse.
Then how can you find healing? When you’ve been wounded, if time is not the answer, what is? Well, to find physical healing from a wound, you have to do something, don’t you? It may be as simple as cleaning the wound and applying a band aid, or it may require major surgery, but in either case, you must pursue healing; it won’t just happen.
Psalm 107:19–21 gives a biblical principle for healing:
Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. He sent out his word and healed them; he rescued them from the grave. Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind.
If you are wounded, or you know someone who is, cry out to the Lord. I mean, literally cry if you want to; just pour all your pain, all your anger, all your confusion, all your disappointment and sorrow out to the Lord. In fact, a good idea is to write it out and tell God how you’re hurting and why you’re hurting. Then, turn to the word of God for healing and comfort.
Start reading the Psalms, but also read in the New Testament. Let the balm of God’s truth pour over your wound. You will be amazed at how healing God’s Word is. Don’t short change time in the Scripture when you’re hurting. Time won’t heal very much, but God’s Word will.
