I think many Christians either don’t know exactly what spiritual disciplines are, or they have the wrong attitude about them.

Frankly, not many of us pursue what it means to be spiritually disciplined. But all of us who claim to be Christ-followers are tasked with the need to grow up in Christ and be spiritually mature.

Hebrews 6:1:  Therefore let us leave the elementary teachings about Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God.

Richard Foster wrote: “Superficiality is the curse of our age. The doctrine of instant satisfaction is a primary spiritual problem. The desperate need is not for a greater number of intelligent people, or gifted people, but for deep people. The classical disciplines of the spiritual life call us to move beyond surface living into the depths.”

The key to a normal growth in our walk with God is to become intentional about having a disciplined spiritual life—putting spiritual disciplines into our lives and consistently sticking to them. These “classical disciplines of the spiritual life” offer such wonderful freedom and joy to our lives as disciples of Jesus Christ; spiritual disciplines position us for that abundant life that Jesus came to give us.
