I’ve been focusing on how the enemy of our soul wants to steal our identity in Christ.  Interestingly, when I googled the term “identity theft,” Wikipedia said that no one can truly steal your identity, and a more appropriate term would be “identity fraud.”

How absolutely true!  You are who you are, and no one can steal that from you.  They can simply cause you lots of trouble and cost you lots of money through identity fraud, but they cannot literally steal your identity.

The same is true, my friend, when Satan tries to steal your identity.  If you are in Christ, born from above by faith in Jesus Christ, no one can steal you.  Jesus said, “I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand.  My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand” (John 10:28-29).

You cannot be stolen; your identity is secure in Christ. But the enemy of your soul can make your life miserable and cause you to lose the joy of your salvation by his fraudulent attempt to keep you from living in the truth of who you are in Christ.  He can’t do anything to change your position, but he can fool you and deceive you by trying to convince you that you are unworthy, unloved, and unlovable.

Identity theft occurs when an imposter obtains key pieces of personal information about you and uses that for financial gain in some way.  Well, Satan tries to use key pieces of personal information about you, to steal your joy and peace.  He will remind you of something in your past—maybe your recent past—of which you are ashamed and use that information to discourage you.  He will repeat messages you’ve heard from others who degraded you and told you that you were worthless.  He will bring up some failure and make you compare yourself to others.

As long as you don’t know how to stand against the enemy of your soul, you will be an easy target for identity fraud.
