PROGRAM D-7748

We’re on a bike ride on a bicycle built for two. This is the bike that can take you to the high places, because the Lord rides with you on this tandem bike.

You are exhausted and disheartened from pedaling so hard and so long on the road to self-fulfillment. Everyone assured you it was the right road to be on—everyone except the Lord, that is. And you didn’t take time to read the road map—the Bible—which would have told you that it’s only when you give up your pursuit of fulfillment that you actually find it. True meaning in life’s journey comes when you get to the high places with Jesus.

“So,” Jesus asks you again, “are you now ready for me to take the driver’s seat?”

“Well, where will you go, Lord? If you’ll just tell me exactly what your plan is, then I’ll be glad to pedal along behind you. But I really need to know precisely how you plan to get us to the high places.”

“My dear child,” he answers, “I know where the high places are and I know exactly how to get there. Isn’t it enough for you to know that I am the eternal God and I have promised to take care of you?”

“You mean, just let you take the driver’s seat without any plan?” you ask with fear and trembling.

“Of course not,” he smiles back at you. “I’m taking you to the high places, and believe me, I intend to get you there. I know the plans I have for you; plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” (Jeremiah 29:11).

“Great, you’ve got a plan,” you say. “Which road will you take? Will it be the road to wife and mother? Or how about the road to successful career woman? As a matter of fact, I’ve even thought about going on the road to missionary. Bet you’d really be happy if I took that road, right?” You continue with enthusiasm, “See, here’s my plans for my life; any of these is just fine with me, and I’m sure they’ll take me to the high places. So, take the front seat, that’s fine, and just choose any of these roads I’ve listed here.”

“I can’t take the front seat until you allow me to chart the course for our journey,” he replies.

“But you haven’t told me where we’re going. Promise you won’t take the road to eternal singleness. Promise? Or the road to the jungle; I don’t like snakes. Just promise me that and I’ll get on and pedal.”

“I promise you that I’ll never leave you or forsake you. Isn’t that enough?” Jesus asks.
