PROGRAM D-7237

Here’s a quote from Pastor Rick Warren that I’d like you to think about:

“I’m saying that no matter what you do—sweeping the streets, running a corporation or the work of a stay-at-home mom—your job is more than a job. The Bible says while you are here on earth, you should use your work as an act of worship. This means whatever you do, you are to do it with enthusiasm. If your heart is not in it, you are in the wrong job. If you are not working with all your heart, you are sinning. I didn’t say that, the Bible says it.”

Would you agree with me that those are pretty strong words?  He says if your heart is not in your job and you’re not working with all your heart, you are sinning.  Where does he get that from?

Well, as he said, from the Bible:

Colossians 3:23-24:  Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward.  It is the Lord Christ you are serving.

That’s not a suggestion for you and me as Christ-followers; it is a directive.  In other words, we need to take this very seriously.  When we do anything for the Lord, we are worshiping the Lord.  Therefore, our work can and should be done as an act of worship.

But wait a minute.  That is easy to say, but how do you keep your heart in a job you don’t like?  In a job where the people are difficult; perhaps in a job where you’re underpaid or undervalued? Pastor Warren says you are sinning if you don’t have your heart in your job.  That seems almost impossible in some situations, doesn’t it?

But remember, what we can’t do on our own, we can do through the power of the Holy Spirit who indwells every believer.  So, the real question is, are you willing to change your attitude toward your work and see it as worship?  If so, you pray Colossians 3:23-24 into your life every day.  That’s where it begins.  You say, “Lord, today I want to do my work for you, as though you are evaluating my work effort.  Help me to do everything I do today unto you, as an act of worship and obedience.” You’ll be amazed at how this will change your workday!
